Jay S. Jump is a Washington State Licensed Attorney admitted to the State Bar, the Eastern District of Washington Federal Courts, the Western District of Washington Federal Courts, the Federal Bankruptcy Court, and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Tax Court.

Mr. Jump has been practicing for over ten years throughout the State of Washington. The areas of practice he has covered in the past ten years are criminal defense, family law, and bankruptcy law. He also has an extensive consumer law practice involving the protection of consumers from the unlawful actions of collectors using the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Fair Credit Billing Act, and a host of other federal consumer protection statutes.

Many years ago, Mr. Jump stopped taking contested family law cases. It was a draining form of practice that held no dignity for the parties in the end. Family Law Court became more a place for spouses to take out their hatred on each other than it was to divide a marital estate.

As Mr. Jump has related many times, he finished a family law case where the Judge awarded everything he and his client were asking for. Hands down, they had won everything they demanded in the original petition. The other side had received nothing and was going to be paying a large amount of child support each month.

When the pair walked out of the courtroom, Mr. Jump looked at this client to see him on the verge of tears. Thinking these were tears of joy, Mr. Jump congratulated him on his win. The client looked back at him and said "My marriage is over." Despite the 'win', the client really had lost.

This became a watershed moment, and at that point, Mr. Jump stopped doing anymore contested proceedings. Marriage is an institution and the two parties who once joined hands and pledged their lives to each other should be able to end the relationship with dignity and respect. Throwing dirt across the table at each other makes neither party happy and it can ruin a parent's relationship with their child.

There simply is no reason to make the end of a marriage be a spiteful affair.
